Undersheriff Julie Dijkstra

Undersheriff Julie Dijkstra
As chief deputy of the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department, Julie is responsible for overseeing most of the day-to-day operations of law enforcement and administration. She is Sheriff Mike Books' most trusted advisor, and her input has contributed greatly to the department's success.

While in high school, Julie went to a career camp sponsored by the Indiana State Police. She went to college intending to become a teacher, but her experience at that camp kept pulling her back to law enforcement. She was hired as a jail officer at the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department in 1985, beginnning a career that has lasted more than two decades.

Julie is a tireless advocate for child safety, and currently is a member of the Safe Kids Elkhart County board, the Elkhart County Child Protection Team, the Salvation Army advisory board, and the Elkhart Area Career Center's public safety advisory committee. She also is active at Grace Point Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Nappanee, serving as an elder and Sunday school teacher.

Julie is married to Egbert Dijkstra, who is director of the Elkhart County Public Safety Communications Center and an assistant soccer coach at NorthWood High School. She has three sons — Ryan, who is married to Angie, and Benjamin and Kyle, who attend Wa-Nee schools.
