RAD for Women
Defensive tactics every woman needs to know are taught at the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

Detectives Norma Alber and Travis Adamson instruct students both in classroom and gymnasium settings. The 12-hour course is taught in the training room of the new law enforcement center, 26861 C.R. 26 (building is closest to the entrance). Each session begins at 6 p.m., and participation is necessary on all four nights.

Dates for the next course will be announced soon.

Women interested in attending free courses should call 891-2341 or send an email. Private clubs, businesses and community groups may arrange training to fit specific schedules by using the same contact information.

“Whatever your age or skill level, we’ll teach you something to prepare yourself physically and psychologically,” said Alber, a certified trainer in the nationally respected Rape Aggression Defense program. “People need this class if they can’t answer whether they are prepared to defend themselves from an attacker.”

Additional information about the program and the trainers is available in our new brochure.

RAD for Kids
Keeping children safe is a priority for the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, and a new educational program teaches youngsters the skills they need to protect themselves.

RAD (Resist Aggression Defensively) for Kids is a new take on a national program usually geared toward women. The self-defense training prepares people for many different types of situations. RAD for Kids takes the training further, dealing with issues such as schoolyard bullies and safety at home.

Classes are divided into two age groups — one for 5 to 7 year olds, and another for 8 to 12 year olds. The RAD for Kids course is taught on five consecutive nights to maximize the effectiveness and keep children engaged.

Upcoming dates will be announced soon.

Parents and guardians interested in having children attend the class may call the sheriff’s department detective bureau at 891-2341 or send an email.

The sessions are taught by Detective Norma Alber and Cpl. Lon Smith, both of whom are certified RAD instructors. Additional information about the program and the trainers is available in our brochure.
