|A new facility, a new way of thinking
A new era has begun.
Elkhart County has moved to a new corrections complex and is one step closer to achieving an important goal — decreasing the number of repeat offenders in the local criminal justice system.
The 400,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility will allow inmates to be given more opportunities for rehabilitation through education and counseling, as well as additional opportunities to meet with family members and attorneys.
The new building at the corner of C.R. 26 and C.R. 7 has housing for 768 prisoners with minimum and medium classification. A pod for maximum classification houses another 168 inmates. In 2009, the sheriff's law enforcement and administrative divisions will move to the site, and a work-release center is possible on the campus, as well. Construction will be done without using a dime of property tax money.
