Assistance sought to identify New Paris burglar
Updated: Friday, Jan. 15, 2010

Detective Ken Saeger of the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department is asking the community to provide information about a suspect who participated in at least one burglary in the New Paris area recently.

Police believe as many as four business break-ins, and possibly more from the Milford area in northern Kosciusko County, are connected. In one at the New Paris Conservancy District office on Jan. 8, a surveillance camera captured footage of a man in the office area rummaging through a desk. The individual in the video is believed to be a white male between 5-feet-10 and 6-feet tall.

Anyone with information about these crimes should call the sheriff’s department at (574) 533-8644 during business hours or (574) 533-4151 on nights and weekends. Detective Saeger also may be reached by email.

The New Paris incidents were:
• Dec. 29 — Burglary at a vehicle repair and paint shop in the 68300 block of C.R. 23, resulting in the loss of up to $50,000 in tools, computers and other items, including an F-350 Ford pickup truck. The vehicle was later recovered.
• Dec. 29 — Located near the first incident, a business in the 19200 block of C.R. 46 reported its office had been ransacked and office equipment and tools were removed from two buildings.
• Jan. 8 – The New Paris Conservancy District, 18121 C.R. 29, reported a forced entry and removal of tools and potentially other items.
• Jan. 12-13 — A business in the 71900 block of C.R. 23 reported a burglary, with tools, cash, propane gas and computer equipment taken. The incident included a 1993 pickup owned by the business being stolen and driven through a chain-link gate.
