Bicycle riders must think safety first
Elkhart County Sheriff's Department officers take safety precautions before getting on their bicycles when going out on patrol. First and foremost, they put on helmets — it's the first step toward being safe, and other bike riders should follow their example.

When you're ready to ride, remember you are moving vehicle, too. In Indiana, bicycle riders must:

• Ride on the right side of the road with traffic, staying as near to the white fog line as possible;
• Respect all rules of the road, especially traffic signals and stop signs;
• Ride no more than two abreast down a road, unless the travel lane is marked exclusively for bicycles;
• Use front and rear lamps when operated on a highway from 30 minutes after sunset to a half-hour before sunrise; and
• Use appropriate hand signals when making a turn.

Additionally, bicyclists must use a permanent attached seat and not carry any other person other than the number for which the bicycle is designed and equipped.

Helmet selection is important for safety
Bicycles may not be attached and pulled by other vehicles, nor shall a bike rider pull another person, bicycle, coaster, roller skater or other type of vehicle.
