ECSD verifies its professional standards
2010 Annual Report

For the eighth time, the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department will verify its professional standards this year and earn accreditation.

Representatives of the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies will visit the department this summer to review the department's compliance in four categories: policies and procedures, administration, operations, and support services. CALEA executives last granted accreditation in December 2008.

As part of the on-site assessment, members of the community will be invited to offer comments at a Public Information Session Thursday, September 8th, 2011, at 5:30p.m. The session will be conducted in Room 104 of the County Adminstration Building, 117 N. Second St., Goshen, Indiana. Those unable to attend and would still like to provide comments to the Assessment Team, may do so by telephone. The public may call 574-891-2305 on Wednesday, September 7th, 2011, between the hours of 9:30a.m. - 11:30a.m. You may review the news release and details by clicking here. Residents may visit the CALEA site for more information about the process.

In November 1984, Sheriff Dick Bowman directed the department to seek professional accreditation to ensure services were delivered to the community in the best way possible. Elkhart County became the first sheriff's department in the coutnry to achieve CALEA recognition.

Elkhart County also is a member of the Indiana Police Accreditation Coalition.
